Abstract: The forests in Northeast China are mainly distributed in areas with over 15° slope after many years’ harvesting, causing much higher requirement on skidder gradeability. Through force analysis of the slope climbing process of skidders, formulas calculating tractive force, maximum climbing gradient, climbing speed and energy consumption were deduced in this study. Calculation based on track skidder ZLY-930 E and wheeled skidder ZLY-925 D showed that the no-load track skidder could climb slopes over 20°,and the climbing speed was normally less than 19 km / h. On the contrary, the no-load wheeled skidder could hardly climb slopes above 15°,but the climbing speed was over 20 km / h. On winter roads where the slope was too high for a full-loaded skidder to get through, the wood mass loaded on a track skidder and a wheeled skidder should be reduced to 2 000 kg and 1 400 kg,respectively.
