Abstract: Objective: Temporomandibular joint disorders(TMD) is a common and frequently-occurring disease in Department of Stomatology, and psychological factor is one of the main causes of the disease. This article to observe the influence of sleep deprivation upon the praxiology and electromyography(EMG) of masticatory muscle, and to investigate the effect of sleep deprivation upon the pathogenesis of TMD. Methods: 35 Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups: normal cage group, tank cage group, SD1d group, SD5d group, and SD9d group. Then "modified multiple plat-form method" was used to develop rat sleep deprivation model followed by detection of praxiology and electromyography of masticatory muscle. Results: In the open-field test, level scores and vertical scores of SD 1d and 5d group were higher than that of control group, and SD 9d group was lower than control group. The electric potentials of temporalis and masseter at both lax and biting status 1, 5 and 9 days after model establishment were significantly higher compared with those of control group. No evident difference was found between bilateral sides. Meanwhile, the resting periods of bilateral temporalis and masseter in sleep deprivation group, as shown on EMG, were significantly prolonged compared with those in control group. Conclusion: Sleep deprivation is able to affect the praxiology and EMG of masticatory muscle, serving as a potential etiology of TMD. This will provide some theoretical guidance for the prevention and treatment of TMD.
