Abstract: Objective: To improve the water solubility and enlarge the application of chitosan. Methods: Phosphonium chitosan(NPCS) was synthesized under the homogenous reaction system with HOBt and EDC as the catalyst and the chemical structure and crystallization of NPCS was characterized by 1H-NMR, FT-IR and XRD. Water solubility and pH stability of NPCS were investigated. Results: NPCS with two degrees of substitution(12.1 % and 21.5 %) were successfully synthesized and compared with chitosan, NPCS had low crystallization, better water solubility and pH stability. Conclusion: Phosphonium modified chitosan had favorable water solubility and good application prospect in drug delivery system and antibacterial materials.
