Abstract: In order for further research on the overburden failure height of fully mechanized caving face, taking 15 mextra-thick coal seam of Tongxin Coal Mine as the research object, the demonstration was carried out by many meth-ods. Applied critical layer theory and material mechanics theory, overburden failure was analyzed as mining face mov-ing. The results show that overburden failure maximum height is 174. 6 m,the inferior key strata controlls overburdenfailure development and the main key stratum restrains overburden failure development. By adopting EH-4 magnetotel-luric methods and numerical simulation methods, the height of overburden failure was determined as 150-172 m re-sult,in consistent with theoretical calculation, theoretical calculation method can be highly effectively predicted. Thestudies show that the overburden failure height of fully mechanized caving face is 10. 0-11. 5 times the height of min-ing in Tongxin Coal Mine and key strata controlls overburden failure development.
