Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper investigates the origin and development of the Subscribe to Open (S2O) model and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of this model compared with other publishing models, aiming to give insights into the transformation and development of Chinese subscription journals in the wave of open access. [Methods] We performed literature research, comparative analysis, and case study to analyze the development status of the S2O model and the advantages and disadvantages of this model compared with other open access models. Furthermore, we investigated the feasibility of the S2O model in the transformation of subscription journals to open access by taking the practice of the EDP Sciences as an example. [Findings] Considering the transformation experience of the EDP Sciences using the S2O model, we find that the S2O model is favorable for the transformation of subscription journals, as it offers more flexibility and freedom to the journals and eases their reliance on external financial support. Moreover, the S2O model is in line with the spirit of open science, providing support for a wider range of researchers, especially those in underfunded areas. [Conclusions] In the development of open science and open access, some Chinese subscription journals are also seeking transformation. In addition to the main open access model, the S2O model is also a good choice. The adoption of emerging open access models helps Chinese journals to go global and raise their voice in the global communication of open science.
